Mechanoreceptors are nerve sensors that are found in the skin, as well as other organs like the pancreas. They are mainly stimulated by pressure and vibration. These are different than free nerve endings, which respond more to general sensations. What function do these mechanoreceptors have in the penis?

Part of the role of mechanoreceptors is to allow a perception of feeling or touch in a specified organ – Especially “Fine” touch and feeling. When these receptors are stimulated, they send information back to the brain stating that they have been activated and a response signal is generated. A good way to understand these type of receptors is to know how it feels when you lightly brush against the hair on your arm. These receptors are located in the hair follicles. By brushing against the hair they activate (are stimulated) and you feel the sensation in that area of your arm.

The main form of sensation in the penile shaft and glans (head) are from Protopathic sensitivity of free nerve endings. This form of receptor is somewhat crude and basic and is usually used for pain and temperature sensation.

The more specialized sensors of the penis are its two main types of mechanoreceptors – Meissner’s Corpuscles and Pacinian Corpuscles. These are allocated to specialized areas of the penis. As we stated earlier, free nerve endings, which are used most notably to detect pain and temperature, are located all throughout the entire penis. There are also a few Ruffini Corpuscles but they are rare in the penis. These respond to stretch and spatial orientation in most instances.

So we are most interested in the Meissner and Pacinian Corpuscles. Let’s see how they work in the penis.

Meissner’s Corpuscles – These are tactile sensors in the surface of the skin. They are what we use at the end of our fingers to detect very fine “touch” sensations. They are responsive to light touch and vibration. In the penis, they are located only in the foreskin and frenulum. These type of receptors allow the penis (through the foreskin) to “feel” its way in the vagina. Men who are circumcised have, unfortunately, lost this ability of very fine penile sensation. The foreskin is the only region of the penis that has Meissner’s Corpuscles apart from the frenulum and its bands. This is the tear-dropped formation just below the glans of the penis as it attaches to the shaft.

Pacinian Corpuscles – Are located in the deeper layers of the skin. They are responsible for sensations of deep pressure and vibration. They are located all through the penis but are especially common in the head of the penis. These are one of the main sources of sensation during intercourse because they respond to pressure, but not continued pressure. So, as the penis enters the vagina, these receptors will be triggered due to the compression of the vaginal muscles. As the penis is withdrawn (to re-enter again) these receptors will turn off. Upon entering the vagina again, the receptors will be stimulated. This accounts for the feeling of “tightness” a man feels upon vaginal intercourse.

Unfortunately for men who have been circumcised and have lost their foreskin, they will be unable to appreciate the fine, tactile feel of the inside of a woman’s vagina. There may be some leftover Meissner’s Corpuscles in the frenulum if it wasn’t damaged too badly during the circumcision.
